A look at Wednesday's bowl games

Military Bowl: The game that starts off three games for the day pits Maryland(8-4) versus East Carolina(6-6). The Maryland Terrapins, like West Virginia have been in the news for all the wrong reasons with the athletic department choosing to force out coach Ralph Friedgen. The Maryland alum went 74-50 at the school, but after he declined to step down was fired. This is his final game at the school.
Maryland is led by freshman quarterback Denny O'Brien who has 21 touchdowns and six interceptions for the year. He was a big part of the Terrapins big turnaround from 2-10 last season. O'Brien will have a big day against the nations worst defense in East Carolina.
The Pirates average 38 points per game this season, good thing to help make up for a porous defense giving up 43 points. Quarterback Dominque Davis topped records in his first season at the position. Davis went for 36 touchdowns, and 3,699 yards. Davis has two main targets in Dwayne Harris and Lance Lewis. Harris has 93 receptions, and Lewis went for 78 catches. A balanced attack features running back Jonathan Harris and 876 yards on the ground.
Get ready for lots of fireworks in this game. East Carolina will push the envelope with their offense, but Maryland promises to put up points also. The Terrapins win with the stronger defense being the difference maker.
Texas Bowl: Illinois(6-6) takes on Baylor (7-5) in this Big Ten/Big 12 matchup. Both teams arrive into this bowl happy to continue playing. Illinois failed to make a bowl game the last two years, while Baylor hasn't tasted postseason since 1994.
Baylor goes as quarterback Robert Griffin goes. Griffin has left his mark all over the team this year with 3,195 passing yards and 595 yards on the ground. Griffin threw for 21 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Jay Finley has rushed for 1,155 yards as a main complement to Griffin.
The Illini have a very similar offense to Baylor's. Running back Mikel Leshoure led the Big-10 in rushing yards with 1,513 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns. Quarterback Nathan Schellhase is a dual threat alike to Griffin, just not as prolific. Schellhase rushed for 815 yards and threw for 1,583 yards.
Both offenses average 32 points per game. The difference will once again be who has the better defense. I'm betting the Illini with definsive minded head coach Ron Zook comes up with the victory.
Alamo Bowl: Oklahoma State (10-2) matches up against Arizona (7-5). The Cowboys were very close to beating Oklahoma and earning a spot in the Big-12 title game and a BCS berth, only to lose 47-41. Now the Cowboys settle for this lower tier game with a struggling team in Arizona. The Wildcats jumped to ninth in the BCS rankings before losing to Oregon State. Then a four game slide to end the season brings the Wildcats here.
Arizona has one of the best quarterbacks in the nation with Nic Foles. Foles has thrown for 2,911 yards on the year, but thats with missing three games during the season. NFL prospect Juron Criner is Foles top target with 72 catches this year. For how good Arizona is offensively, Oklahoma State offense tops them across the board.
The Cowboys have the nation's number one offense that features a very balanced attack. Averaging 537 yards per game is certainly one to gawk at. Quarterback Brandon Weeden numbers do the talking. Going for 32 touchdowns and 4,413 yards ranks amongst the best quarterbacks. Justin Blackmon serves as the top target with 102 catches for 1.665 yards. The Biletnikoff winner as the countrys top wide receiver is eight yards short of breaking Larry Fitzgerald's somphomore's receiving record. Kendall Hunter balances out the offense with 1,516 yards on the year and 15 touchdowns.
Another game with two very dynamic offenses alike the Military bowl which starts out the days action. Both teams will go over 40 points but Oklahoma State has too much star power to lose.
