A look at the West Region of NCAA tourney

March 15th 2011 23:03
Duke stars as the number-one seed versus Hampton, the champs from the MEAC conference who are the 16th seed. The Pirates are 24-8, and Duke after winning the ACC is 30-4. The Blue Devils are the defending national champs. Led by Nolan Smith and Kyle Singler, they win over Darrion Pellum and Hampton.

San Diego State is the second-seed, taking on Northern Colorado, the champ from the Big Sky conference as the 15th-seed. The Bears are 21-10 on the year, and just entered Division 1 play four years ago, now they get a game with San Diego State. The Aztecs are 32-2, and the Mountain West Champion. They finally beat BYU in the final after losing the first two games with the Cougars. Kawhi Leonard leads the Aztecs past sharpshooting Devon Beitzel and Northern Colorado.

Bucknell after beating Lafayette in the Patriot League final enter the West as the 14-seed. The Bison face off against Big East champ Connecticut who is the third-seed. The Huskies are 26-9, and Bucknell is 25-8. Kemba Walker of Connecticut has been on a tear, the last five games scoring 150 points. He will score here, though Bucknell will keep him under 30. Connecticut wins.

Texas is 27-7 and the fourth-seed of the West. Oakland, the champion from the Summit is the Longhorns opponent as the 13th-seed. The Golden Grizzlies beat Tennessee on the year, just one of their 25 wins against nine losses. Texas ended Kansas's run of home wins at 68, but struggled the rest of the year. Texas lost in the first round of last years tournament. Make it two straight as Keith Benson goes for a monster game in the upset.

Arizona lost the Pac-10 tournament on a last second shot to Washington to fall to 27-7. They are the fifth-seed in a good matchup with 12-seed Memphis.

Memphis won the Conference USA tournament to improve to 25-9, while Arizona is 27-7. Memphis has nobody who will be able to control Derrick Williams as the Wildcats storm on.

The Missouri Tigers are the 11th-seed after an up and down season, ending at 23-10. Cincinnati, another inconsistent team is the sixth-seed. The Bearcats are 25-8, after posting a 11-7 record in the Big East. The Bearcats have a great defense, giving up on average 58 points per game. Missouri has a great offense, scoring on average 81 points. A game of strength versus strength. This game will be a great one, look for Missouri, a team with more experience to move on as Laurence Bowers outplays Yancy Gates down low.

The seventh-seed Temple comes from the Atlantic 10 with a record of 25-7. 10th-seeded Penn State is a surprise team, after posting a 19-14 record. Talor Battle and Penn State finally make the tournament, just barely. Temple is a solid team who typically struggles in the NCAA tournament. Who wins? A close game ensues with Penn State emerging victorious.

Tennessee enters the tournament as the ninth-seed, they face eighth-seeded Michigan. The Wolverines are 20-13, led by Tim Hardaway Jr. who averages 13 points. Tennessee struggled down the stretch after a great start. Scotty Hopson is a solid player averaging 17 points for the 19-14 team. Michigan wins a tight one.
