Either 16th-seeded Arkansas Little-Rock or UNC-Ashville, get to play top-seeded Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh is 27-5 on the year, and have hung around the top-five in the country all season. Ashton Gibbs, Brad Wannamaker, and Gilbert Brown combine for 39 of Pittsburgh's points. They will be too strong for whoever wins the play-in game.
Second-seeded Florida enters the tournament as the SEC conference runners-up after losing to Kentucky. The Gators are a solid team with lots of experience headed by Chandler Parsons, Kenny Boynton, and Erving Walker. 15th-seeded UC-Santa Barbara is the opponent here after winning the Big West conference final. The Gauchos are led by Orlando Johnson who averages 21 points. Florida wins here easily.
BYU is the third-seed of the region, and their opponent is Wofford who won the Southern Conference final. Wofford is 21-12, while BYU is 30-4, but just 3-2 since losing Jeremy Davies to a school honor code violation. Jimmer Freddette can do it all, averaging 28 points per game. Wofford will keep this game close, and may pull off a huge upset, as BYU doesn't have much depth. Though its hard to go against Freddette. Wofford has talented players in Noah Dahlman and Cameron Rundles. BYU wins but has problems in doing so.
Wisconsin scored 33 points in their final game of the Big-10 tournament. They are the fourth-seed of the region, taking on 13th-seed Belmont. The Bruins of Belmont are 30-3 on the year, though they really don't have a great win. But they nearly defeated Tennessee and Vanderbilt. The Bruins have won 12 straight and are playing much better basketball right now then the 23-8 Badgers. Ian Clark and Mick Hedgepeth lead the way in the upset of Wisconsin.
Kansas State is the fifth-seed with a record of 22-10. They lost three times to Colorado who got snubbed by the NCAA tournament committee. Utah State is the opponent as the 12th -seed. The Aggies should be a eight or nine-seed adding a degree of difficulty to this game for Kansas State. Utah State is 30-3 on the year. This game could be one of the best first round matchups. Utah State with Tai Wesley leading the way outlast Jacob Pullen and Kansas State in the win.
St. Johns is the sixth-seed with a record of 21-11. Gonzaga won the WCC conference to earn the automatic bid and are 24-9. The Zags are lead by Stephen Gray who averages 14 points, four rebounds and four assists. St. Johns has a great player in Dwight Hardy, and are senior laden. Though the Red Storm last made the NCAA tournament in 2002, while Gonzaga is a main-stay now. The Zags win a tight game here, moving on.
UCLA and Michigan State are the seven and ten seeds, matching up in the first round. Both teams have storied pasts and now look to match those successes. Michigan State is 19-14, while UCLA has a record of 22-10. The Spartans are used to winning come tournament time. UCLA has a young group of guys headed by Reeves Nelson. The Bruins put forth a great effort but lose in the final moments to Kalin Lucas and the Spartans.
Butler returns as the national runners up from last year as the eighth-seed. Old Dominion is the first opponent for the Bulldogs. The Monarchs have a record of 27-6, and are an at-large bid from the Colonial Conference. Frank Hassell has been on a tear for the Monarchs increasing his scoring average from 15 points to 23 during the conference tournament. Butler is 23-9 and have returning guys, Matt Howard and Shelvin Mack leading the way. The Bulldogs won the Horizon conference easy after a slow start and continue to roll, winning a great game.
