A look at the NEC Conference title game
March 9th 2011 01:51
Only two games are scheduled for Wednesday with bids to the NCAA tournament on the line. The Northeast Conference and Big Sky Conference top two teams will take to the court.
Robert Morris will get a chance to defend their 2-time title in the NEC, while top-seeded Long Island will look to dethrone them. The former Robert Morris coach jumped to Rutgers, Mike Rice Jr. after the teams recent success. This season was a little tougher for the Colonials, but a mild upset of Quinnipac on Sunday earned them a chance. Velton Jones leads Robert Morris with 12 points per game. Robert Morris top scorer Karon Abraham was lost for the tournament after tearing his achilles tendon, the team has still mustered a run.
Long Island steamrolled through a weak schedule this year, going 26-5 on the year. They went 16-2 in conference play, easily winning the regular season mark. Robert Morris defeated the Blackbirds back on December 2nd in the teams first meeting, 70-69. Long Island returned the favor by defeating Robert Morris, 83-67 on January, 20th. Julian Boyd and Jamal Olaswere leads the Blackbirds. Boyd scores 13 points and nine rebounds, while Olaswere averages 12 points and eight boards. Olaswere scored 17 points and had nine rebounds in the teams second outing with the Colonials. Long Island has won 20 out of their last 21 games this year.
Until Robert Morris gets defeated they are the team to beat. Long Island has had a great year, but against questionable non-conference opponents plus the weak NEC division schedule. Robert Morris played Pittsburgh, West Virginia, and Arizona this year. Tough pick but going with Long Island.
