A look at the lone unbeaten
February 1st 2011 02:05
After Thursday, and San Diego State lost to BYU, only one mens college basketball team remained unbeaten. The top-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes. The Buckeyes had to hold on for dear life versus Northwestern on Saturday but held on for the victory, 58-57. Ohio State stayed at number one for the third straight week. The Buckeyes are more than just freshman phenom Jared Sullinger. Sullinger is in the running for national player of the year honors, but other Buckeyes contribute to their winning ways.
Sullinger averages 19 points, and nine rebounds. He brings so much more then points, just having his long lanky presence in the middle makes opponents think twice about bringing the ball to the middle. Sullinger is flanked by three overclassmen.
Guards Jon Diebler, William Buford and forward David Lighty, all average in double figures. Buford is second on the team with 14 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Lighty averages 12 points, and four rebounds, while Diebler scores 11 points per game. Freshman point guard Aaron Craft is the distributor, averaging five assists per game.
Ohio State this weekend hosts Michigan and travels to Minnesota on Sunday. The Buckeyes should easily get past Michigan, then that Minnesota game may be trouble. Everyone thought Purdue would give Ohio State more of an game last week, but the Boilermakers failed to show up. Minnesota with the homecourt advantage could pose a problem to Ohio State. Getting through the Big-Ten schedule unscathed would be something to admire. Ohio State has the bodies to do this, but don't count on it.
