A look at the lone unbeaten

February 1st 2011 02:05

After Thursday, and San Diego State lost to BYU, only one mens college basketball team remained unbeaten. The top-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes. The Buckeyes had to hold on for dear life versus Northwestern on Saturday but held on for the victory, 58-57. Ohio State stayed at number one for the third straight week. The Buckeyes are more than just freshman phenom Jared Sullinger. Sullinger is in the running for national player of the year honors, but other Buckeyes contribute to their winning ways.

Sullinger averages 19 points, and nine rebounds. He brings so much more then points, just having his long lanky presence in the middle makes opponents think twice about bringing the ball to the middle. Sullinger is flanked by three overclassmen.

Guards Jon Diebler, William Buford and forward David Lighty, all average in double figures. Buford is second on the team with 14 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Lighty averages 12 points, and four rebounds, while Diebler scores 11 points per game. Freshman point guard Aaron Craft is the distributor, averaging five assists per game.

Ohio State this weekend hosts Michigan and travels to Minnesota on Sunday. The Buckeyes should easily get past Michigan, then that Minnesota game may be trouble. Everyone thought Purdue would give Ohio State more of an game last week, but the Boilermakers failed to show up. Minnesota with the homecourt advantage could pose a problem to Ohio State. Getting through the Big-Ten schedule unscathed would be something to admire. Ohio State has the bodies to do this, but don't count on it.

From what I've seen of the Buckeyes, their biggest strength is their own self confidence. They believe that they are going to win every game, no matter the situation. If they lead by 10 or trail by 10, this is a team that believes they can do it and, thus far, have found a way to step up and do it. Not that I'm annointing them the national champions, but it's going to take a pretty special complete 40 minute effort to knock them off.

I love Ohio State's unstoppable strategy. You can't stop Sully alone, so you have to double-team him. He is such a great passer that when you do that, he kicks it out to the beast perimeter shooters. Unstoppable baby. They will lose eventually, but this team is the best and they know it.

Ohio State is such a good team this year. Teams can't let Sullinger receive the ball with two feet in the paint, or it will be two points. Then they have Diebler who knocks down the three, and Buford, Lighty, and Craft are all very good players. They are going to be tough to stop. The game at Minnesota should be interesting because pretty much every team that goes to The Barn has a rough time. Good stuff.
