3rd round of NCAA tournament update
March 21st 2011 01:33
A great day of games today with last second finishes around, with one blowout. Ohio State was raining three-pointers in their 98-66 demolishing of George Mason. The Buckeyes connected on 16 out of their 28 3-point attempts in the win. Three games went down to the buzzer, as Duke, Arizona, and North Carolina continued their march on.
One game yet to start with Notre Dame and Florida State. Illinois and Kansas just began their showdown. Then in the surprise game of the day, Virginia Commonwealth holds a 16-point lead with 3:30 left in the game over third-seeded Purdue. This will be a true upset if the Rams hold on. Purdue is not putting up much of a fight, which is a big surprise. VCU will advance to play the winner of the late-game between the Fighting Irish and Florida State.
Arizona advanced to play Duke in the next round. Both teams won in the final seconds of their respective games. This will be the first meeting between the two teams since 2000 when they faced off for the NCAA title game. Duke held onto dear life as Michigan came alive with abound 11 minutes left on the game clock. Duke was ahead 58-43, and it didn't appear if Michigan had anything left. Then the Wolverines began clawing at the lead as Duke couldn't hit anything. Tim Hardaway's three-pointer with 1:30 cut the lead to one-point. Nolan Smith, Duke's player of the year canidate had a chance to put the game away, but missed one of two free throws, and so the Wolverines needed one field goal to tie. Darius Morris took the running shot, which bricked out, preserving Duke to continue. Coach Mike Krzyzewski earned his 900th career win.
Arizona defeated Texas, 70-69 thanks to Derrick Williams's late three-point play. The Wildcats were in charge for most of the game, then Texas made their run, and took the lead with just over a minute left. A five-second call on inbounds gave the Wildcats all the chance they needed after Texas took the lead. Arizona gives the PAC-10 one team in the sweet 16 after Washington took North Carolina to the buzzer, but bowed out. The Huskies were in charge for most of the game, like Arizona, they just couldn't finish the deal. Harrison Barnes three-pointer with over four minutes left in the game, gave the Tar Heels a two-point lead they wouldn't relingquish in the win. North Carolina advances to play the winner of the latest close game, happening right now with Marquette and Syracuse.
Chris Singleton is back for Florida State in tonight's game with Notre Dame. Singleton played in Florida State's win over Texas A&M for minimal time. The forward is Florida State's leading scorer and rebounder. If he is able to play longer minutes today, then expect another barn-burner.
