15-0 Team Ready For Conference Play
January 2nd 2011 23:45
The San Diego State Aztecs after defeating Occidental College, 93-50, improved to 15-0 on the season. Now comes Mountain West Conference play. San Diego State is currently seventh in the top-25 poll, and will likely move up in the new poll, with fourth ranked Connecticut losing to Pittsburgh during the week.
This Steve Fisher led club is similar to the Michigan teams which he coached, with the strong guard play, and solid interior players. Kawhi Leonard is the Fisher's Chris Webber. The sophomore is averaging 15.7 points and 9.6 rebounds per game on the season. Senior point guard D.J. Gay is the Jalen Rose of the squad, averaging 11.9 points and leading the team in assists with three a game. Forward Malcom Thomas compares to Juwan Howard on the team averaging 11.6 points and 7.1 boards per game.
San Diego State's big three and Michigan's big three compare favorably, which bodes well for the Aztecs chance as a threat come NCAA tourney time.
Fisher's career record is 398-120, 185 of these wins came from Michigan. Even though many of these wins were vacated as terms of the Ed Martin scandal, in which the booster gave players money. Fisher's record speaks for itself, even with that scandal. San Diego State is poised to be this year's Butler, Gonzaga, or even George Mason, as the outsider pushing the big boys to the limit.
The Aztecs begin conference play Wednesday at TCU.
